The Academy

Presentation

Glory comes to a motion picture in three ways: through the pleasure of the public (theatrical admissions, video purchases, television audiences), through the favor of the critics (the media and festivals), and through the recognition of film industry professionals (the national film academies).

The Algerian Academy of Arts, is the institution in Algeria that organizes this third form of cinematic distinction, dedicated to films and the people who make them.

It is made up of 100 voting members, divided into 10 colleges, who vote each year to distinguish the artists, technicians and films they consider the most remarkable, by awarding them a trophy called a “Jazair Award“.

The role
THE RULES OF THE ACADEMY AND THE LIST OF ITS MEMBERS

This is the document that sets out all the Academy’s operating conditions. They are updated each year by the Academy’s Board.

The number of members making up the Academy is updated at the end of each year by the Academy Board, in accordance with these Regulations, in the light of applications for membership and any resignations or withdrawals.

CENSUS OF PROFESSIONALS AND FILMS ELIGIBLE FOR THE JAZAIR AWARDS

Each year, the Académie lists people and eligible films/series, based on information provided by the Board and cross-checked with production companies.

THE VOTING PROCESS

The Academy organizes and proposes various ways of viewing eligible films/series, and sends voting materials to members for the first and second rounds. It also manages the voting, counting and results publishing procedures.

THE JAZAIR AWARDS CEREMONY

This is the Algerian cinema event of the year, and the Academy’s most visible project: three hours of live entertainment during which the winners are unveiled, in front of over 800 guests, in an emblematic venue in Algiers, broadcast live and free-to-air.

OTHER DEDICATED EVENTS

Throughout the year, the Algerian Academy pays tribute to the men and women who make Algerian cinema, through various events organized in conjunction with the Ceremony.

Creation

The Algerian Academy was founded in 2024 on the initiative of Hichem “HimSchacK” MEZAACHE.

It brings together film industry professionals and personalities who have chosen to join forces in order to highlight the eminently collective nature of cinematographic creation, and to draw the public’s attention to these professionals who, through the passionate and demanding alliance of their skills, underpin the essential singularity of the cinema film.

« The Oscars were born in 1929. I discovered them for the first time in 2001, when I was 10 years old, and since then (now a very long time ago!) I’ve always been obsessed by the existence of this emblematic figure, not of flesh and bone, but of bronze and gilt, whose reputation was worldwide.

The idea of creating an Algerian equivalent germinated within me, until the name Jazair Awards came to mind. Oscar, Jazair Award, a few letters that rhymed to such an extent that the birth of the latter became obvious, for the greater good of promoting cinema, in Algeria at any rate.” »
